I'm excited to announce this new show of my photography -- 45 large color portraits of transgender women, people I know from Divas Nightclub and Bar, San Francisco's predominant transgender club.
I have been a regular at Divas for years, and have been photographing transgender women I met there since 1997. When the club instituted topless shows in 2002, I photographed women dancing there for Spectator magazine, which ran a large portfolio of those photos in March, 2003. Over time, as my personal interest in and emotional involvement with various women at Divas deepened, I began to photograph people there in ways that went well beyond images of interest to Spectator. Sometimes I photographed dancers performing or backstage. As I came to know people better, I photographed both dancers and other trans women at Divas -- bartenders, lip-synch performers, disc jockeys, regulars, visitors -- more extensively at their homes, or at mine.
About a year ago I began playing with the idea of putting together an exhibit of portraits from Divas as a way of communicating some of the power, honesty, and personal presence I find so striking among the women there. When I showed proofs of the photos to Carol Queen, director of The Center for Sex and Culture, she immediately suggested they host a show of the portraits. After appearing at CSC, the photos will also be shown at the Diversity Center in Santa Cruz, and at Seattle's prestigious Benham Gallery.
Photographs in Divas of San Francisco range from the demure to the erotic, from introspective moments to flamboyant on-stage performance. They include the glamour and emphatic sexual appeal central to many women at Divas while reaching beyond personal appearance to show the spirit and strikingly immediate personal presence of their subjects.
The women at Divas comprise a broad spectrum of ages, body types, ethnic and economic backgrounds -- as well as widely different personalities, lifestyles, sexual orientations, gender identifications, and personal histories. These photographs provide an intimate personal look at a remarkable group of transgender women showing their joy and their sadness, their strength and their uncertainty, their grace and their awkwardness, their toughness and their vulnerability -- and document the courage and integrity that lie at the heart of embracing one's innermost sense of personal reality in the midst of a misunderstanding, frightened, and often hostile world.
Please come to the grand opening reception and party Saturday night, June 3rd (with performances by a number of women in the photographs), or stop by the Center for Sex and Culture to see the show between this Thursday, May 25, and June 27.
