A Brief Biography

Candida Royalle, a native New Yorker, comes from a background rich in the arts with training in art, music, voice and dance. Her educational background includes the New York High School for Art and Design, Parson’s School of Design and the City University of New York. In San Francisco, she became active in the avant-garde theater scene, performing with some of the original Cockettes, the Angels of Light and the late Divine. She later moved on to sing in jazz clubs and classical choruses. It was in San Francisco, in the more liberal 70’s, that Ms. Royalle became a featured actress in adult movies.

In 1984 she founded Femme Productions in order to create erotic films from a woman’s perspective that promoted positive sexual role modeling and that could be enjoyed by both women and men. Fourteen groundbreaking movies later, the Femme line has gone on to win several awards and is now distributed worldwide by Adam & Eve.

Ms. Royalle is a founding board member of Feminists for Free Expression. She is the only adult film maker to have been invited into membership by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT). She has addressed many conferences both here and abroad including the World Congress on Sexology, The Smithsonian Institute, The American Psychiatric Association (APA), several major universities including Princeton and Columbia, and Wellesley College, and most major TV talk shows. Profiles of Ms. Royalle have appeared in The New York Times, Time Magazine, The Washington Post, The London Times, Elle, and Mademoiselle, among others. She is now preparing to pen her illustrious memoirs, which will detail her many adventures and delve into how she’s maintained her sense of dignity while breaking society taboos.
